The design and the dimensioning of the building structure are at the core of our enegineering job. This is always done in accordance with the norms, costs & standards that are in effect. To do so, the Grontmij team has the latest software, including final elements calculation packages with modules for the organic check of a.o. steel, concrete and wood.
Structural engineering is developed in phases and in close consultation with the designer/architect:
Conceptual design
In this first phase, the structural engineer advises the architect on determining the general principles of the structure of the building. Grontmij looks for the most economical solution that fits within the architectural concept. Based on the soil investigation, the most economical type of foundation is proposed. Intensive consultation with the other designers (heating, ventilation, sanitary facilities…) contributes to a coordinated and integrated design. The architect receives a first indication of the dimensioning of the most important structural elements, such as floors, beams, columns and walls, which need to be included in the plans. As a result, structure and architecture make for one coherent concept from the start. The conceptual design of the structure will be included in the architectural plans. The structure design is completed with a concept note that lists the basic principles, and briefly justifies them. A concise cost estimate based on the floor space completes the conceptual design.
Preliminary design
At the preliminary design stage, the structure is fully calculated and all elements are given their final dimensions. In addition to concerns for a structure that is as economical and compact as possible, Grontmij aims for a comfortable, simple and fast implementation process. That is why we take into account as much as possible the wish by many contractors to pre-manufacture construction parts. Structure plans – also referred to as casing plans – , tender specifications and detailed measurements are included in the tender documents. If requested, Grontmij also gives an estimate of quantities and unit prices for concrete and other materials.
Detailed design
At the implementation phase, in consultation with the contractor, the plans are completed with the required details. When the contractor has decided upon the construction methods, additional detail plans and reinforcement plans will be made. Here as well, Grontmij aims for the greatest possible simplicity and speed of execution. This is possible through the maximum use of commonly used materials.
Follow-up of the execution of work
Obviously, a proper execution is crucial. That is why the building site is regularly visited to check the works, and especially at key moments in the building process. During the entire process, we like to offer advice to client, contractor and architect. That way, the project is well managed and high quality at a low cost is guaranteed.
