Process & drinking water

Water is a sustainable good, with regards to both quality and quantity. The extraction, preparation and distribution of drinkable water in Belgium is handled by the water societies with the greatest possible care. In addition to households, industries use large quantities of water. The sources (ground or surface water) are often few or polluted. Grontmij applies many years of experience and expertise to face this challenge and to provide water in a sustainable way, now and in the future.

Our services range from water audits and process technology to design, constructions and operational management using a multitude of techniques, whereby we constantly evaluate sustainability against costs. In addition to the traditional techniques (softening, filtration...), oxidation and membrane techniques are used to achieve the right water quality at the right location.

Water audit
In a water audit, the quantities and quality of the waterflows are mapped in a structured way. After analysis, it is indicated where there is possible potential for savings, and how to achieve this. Also the possible disconnection and reuse of rainwater demands the necessary attention. Grontmij is a certified water expert with regards to studies for licencing or certification.

Process water
For the optimisation of the production and the use of process water (production water, cooling water, boiler water…), the choice of source and quality requirements are essential. Still too often, high-quality (drinking) water is used when it is not necessary. Grontmij approaches sustainable water use as follows:

  • Maximum reduction in consumption (careful operational management and use of water-saving technologies)
  • Maximum use of sustainable sources (surface water, rainwater, re-use)
  • Maximum efficiency when using ‘rare’ or ‘expensive’ sources, such as drinking water or demineralised water

Our experts have years of experience in using the right technology at the right place. The reuse of household and industrial wastewater, a.o. through membrane techniques, is becoming more popular. For Grontmij, operational security and quality guarantees are absolutely key. Both the investment cost and the operational cost are carefully determined in order to make responsible choices.
