SEWAGE SYSTEMS, COLLECTORS & PUMPING STATIONS

The water quality of our rivers must meet the standards set in the European Water Framework Directive by 2015. Grontmij has the capacity, knowledge and experience to realise this target. To do so, we work across various fields, including:

  • The development of separate sewer systems and the construction of collectors and pumping stations for a more efficient and sustainable collection and treatment of wastewater
  • An innovative and integral approach for the collection of waste and storm water runoff in rural areas via a pressure sewage system

Disconnection of rainwater and separate collection of wastewater

On public domains and private plots, rainwater disconnected and drained separately, buffered or infiltrated. The drainage of the rainwater is slowed down via buffering and/or infiltration in the soil. To this end Grontmij designs technical solutions, such as ditches and wads, underground structures and pipes. The wastewater, which is now separated from the rainwater, is drained to either an ITW (Individual Treatment of Wastewater) or a sewage collection system downriver.

Pressure sewage system offers many advantages
Grontmij is at the basis of the successful development of the pressure sewage system. In Belgium, this technique offers a lot of potential in rural areas. Pressure sewage systems make for the separate drainage of wastewater to a waste water treatment installation. Grontmij has optimised the pressure sewage system over the years and developed the calculation programmes Rio-GL for the dimensioning of the pressure pipes. Recently, also the automatic operating and security system of the pumping stations via computer module was implemented. Simple construction methods, involvement of local residents and automatic operating systems make this solution sustainable and very reliable.
