A new sustainable head office is being developed for Grontmij in Belgium
Property developer ViRix and Grontmij are going to develop a state of the art sustainable office to function as the head office of Grontmij in Belgium. This ‘eco-office’ will be located in Mechelen near the station and will replace the vacant Belgacom-site.
Project Zuidpoort, the urban context
The eco-office is also part of a larger urban project called ‘Zuidpoort’ which is the redevelopment of the largely vacant Belgacomsite near the station of Mechelen. This area is being transformed into a high quality living and office project under the guidance of property developer ViRix.
Sustainable renovation
In view of carrying out a sustainable renovation of the Belgacom site, Grontmij and ViRix used a criteria-rating-system for sustainable office buildings. This criteria-rating-system focuses on quality of life & well-being, environment & sustainability and energy. It is only possible to adhere to all these criteria by using innovative and sustainable technologies. The ambitious design follows the following criteria:
- Easy access
- Optimal thermal, acoustic and visual comfort
- Good air quality and ventilation
- Maximum limitation of the energy need and use
- Maximum limitation of water use
- Maximum use of renewable energy sources
- Appropriate material use
The excellent location plays a crucial role in this story. The site is easily and quickly accessible via public transport (train and bus). The car mobility is guaranteed through the development of the underground parking on the site as well as the quick connection to the E19 highway.
Grontmij’s contribution
Grontmij is not only leasing offices in this new eco-building but is responsible for its design and engineering.
Sustainable building
Beginning November 2010 the new office will be finished and will shine as an outstanding example when it comes to sustainable building for offices. It speaks for itself that such a great result can only be realised through intensive cooperation between Grontmij and the property developer ViRix.
