21 Sep 2011 | Belgian Public Procurement Partnership (PPP) award for Grontmij

The assignment: design and manage the construction of three bus depots that are sustainable and energy efficient. The aim was to create durable facilities in both the depot itself and the related buildings that not only meet current sustainability regulations but anticipate future requirements.

On 15 September 2011, the Minister of Mobility and Public Works in Flanders recognised our expertise with the PPP Award for most promising project.

Sustainability focus
Grontmij won the project execution after we prepared the technical, project management and quality control components for the tender. Construction began in August 2010 and we are currently in the delivery phase. Key elements in all three depots are that 25% of the energy used is generated on site from renewable sources. We have also installed a rain water catchment system so that the depots are as green as possible. Building materials are also durable.

This approach is why the project was first nominated for the PPP Award. We received the prize on Flanders’ National PPP Day, an annual event where the public and private sectors can meet and share knowledge.

Says Dave Hens, project leader ‘Winning an award is a real achievement. But this one is especially important as it showcases Grontmij at an event where so many relevant players in our focus areas are present. We’re thrilled.’
